40. Unusual Puzzles

Agam POV

'This is the house from what my spies told me.'

Viraj says as we stealthily move to the house hiding our appearances.

Yesterday Ekansh and Viraj came in my office saying,

'You won't believe what I found.'

I stood up from my chair, frowning and asking,

'Then you better make me believe.'

They both are wearing serious frowns. Viraj sits down and says,

'Aapne jab hume patra ke baare mein baataya aur khaas taur mein Rainagarh ke baare mein, toh humne apne guptcharon ko Rainagarh bheja.'

'When you told us about the letter and especially about Rainagarh, we sent our spies to Rainagarh.'

Ekansh continues,

'Unhe waha ye dekhna thi ki waha pe koi aisa aadmi jo abhi aaya ho aur chala bhi gaya, hume ek adami ke baare mein pata chala jo aapke vivaah ke 3 din baad waha aake reh rahe the aur aap par jab hamla hua uske dusre din usne apna ghar chod diya.'

'They were sent to find a person who had come and left, meaning staying there for short time, we came to know about a man who came to stay there 3 days after your marriage and left the house of the second day when you were attacked.'

I don't find much strange in this thing, we can't doubt every person who comes to stay in our kingdom just because of the timing of their settle.

But I always pursue if there is even the slightest bit of doubt.

Viraj sees me frowning and says,

'I know what you are thinking but that man had delivered the letter here.'

Ekansh explains,

'Your soldiers told that a man delivered the letter, our spies tried to trace his steps, which led them to this place.'

Viraj leans forward and says,

'Hum galat bhi ho sakte hai parantu ek baar apne se inn baaton ki pushti karne mein kya jaa raha hai?'

'We may be wrong but there is no harm in confirming these things to ourselves once?'

I think about it then ask him,

'What did you mean by checking out?'

They both look at each other then Ekaansh says,

'I think we will be able to garner more information by on our own, we should go there in disguise and pretend to be from Suryagarh, plus we can check out that house where he was staying.'

I nod my head thinking that it will be best to do this on our own.

But I worry about leaving Mohini here without me and she will worry about me leaving like that just before the coronation.

She will be afraid for me, but I have to convince her.

So I convinced her somehow, even though I didn't like the fear in her eyes for me.

After she fell asleep, I picked her up in my arms.

She burrows into me as I carry her inside.

I lay her down then cover her. I sit down beside her and run my fingers on her face, finding comfort.

I will stand on my promise to her, I will come back for her.

I tried to made her day today special because I know she won't like me leaving her like this without spending time with her when we didn't have any time these past 4 days.

It gave me the perfect opportunity to surprise her and apologise for my mistakes.

I have been learning sign language every day from the time she rejected that Pooran Poli made by me.

Swati would teach me in the afternoon when Mohini would take a nap after completing her work as the Queen.

She wouldn't go to the Royal court because she had promised herself before going to Malwa that she would enter there with me only.

She told me in writing when I saw her not attending the court.

Then I left her and met up with Viraj and Ekansh to go there.

We stayed the night outside of Rainagarh, paying for one night in the cottage.

We woke up in the morning and set out for the village.

We move towards the house.

The house is located slightly off from the village towards the forest side.

When I reach the spot, I could clearly see the place where Mohini and I were during the night of the attack.

It matches the direction from which those arrows came from.

I know one thing that the person here could be involved in my attack but it doesn't say that this person has send me the letter.

I look at those who are watching me carefully and I say,

'This place is in the direction from where those arrows came from, this place or this place along with the man staying here was involved in my attack.'

Their faces become grim. We enter the house and start checking the room but it looks like whoever had been there had wiped the whole place off.

There is nothing to look over; that person didn't leave behind anything.

He cleverly wiped every clue that can lead to him, which proves that he is experienced in these things.

We come out and Ekaansh says while sighing with frustration,

'He really planned his whole stay, and I think he only sent that letter to draw you out.'

My thinking is also going in that direction too.

We walk back to the village and stop to have lunch.

We order the food in one eatery dhaba. We pretend to be from Suryagarh but from another region.

While we wait for food, we try to engage in conversation with the waiter.

'Arre ye jo jungle ke paas wala ghar jo hai, usme rehne ke liye kisse baat karni hogi.'

'Hey, this house is near the forest, who will I have to talk to to live in it?'

He frowns at me and says,

'Bhaiji, hume nahi pata ki uss ghar ka malik kaun hai aur woh yaha rehta bhi hai ya nahi.'

'Brother, we don't know who is the owner of that house and whether he lives here or not.'

Viraj intervenes,

'So you mean nobody lived there till now?'

He shakes his head and says,

'Ek aadmi abhi ye kuch lagbhag 2 mahine pehle rehne yaha aaya tha aur 1 mahine pehle chod ke chala gaya.'

'A man came here to live about 2 months ago and left a month ago.'

Ekansh acts disturbed and asks,

'So he was the owner or renter?'

He shakes his head, then leaves, and after some time, he enters with our food.

He keeps our food on the table and says,

'Nobody here knows who he was as he never engaged with us, but yes, sometimes he would ask questions about the past of this kingdom and our likeness to our Queen and King.'

He then smiles and says,

'Humne suna hai ki humari Rani gungi hai aur sabko yahi laga ki woh dhang se sashaan nahi kar paengi par apne RajTilak mein jo unhone kiya aur humare Yuvraj ke liye apni mayake se lad padi, ye sab sunkar ab hum ashwast hai ki humari Rani gungi hai par kaabil usse kai adhik hai.'

'We heard that our Queen is mute and everyone thought that she would not be able to rule properly. But what she did in her Rajtilak and the way she fought her maternal home for our Yuvraj, after hearing all this now we are sure that our Queen may be mute but she is capable of much more than that.'

Hearing those words for Mohini fills me with pride.

She earned the respect and loyalty of our people.

We all nod our head, agreeing with his logic. I then lean forward and ask him, pretending to be curious,

'So you never tried to find out who he was or you ever saw someone entering his cottage which could give you insight in this mysterious person?'

I could see him getting excited over this.

It always work, I just have to make the person mysterious and bring the curiosity cat of the person from inside to outside.

He leans conspiratoly and tells us,

'I have seen 3-4 times a woman visiting him.'

I look at Viraj and Ekansh as they look at me, it could give us some insight so I ask making my own voice conspirated,

'Did you see her face or did you know her?'

Suddenly a voice close behind me says,

'No, she wasn't from here.'

We all look back to see a woman standing with serious face, she comes closer and says,

'Aur hume aise pata hai kyunki woh ladki pet tak ka ghoonghat kadh ke aati thi, aur sirf wahi auratein iss tarah ghoonghat mein kisi ke ghar jaati hai jo bikau hoti hai.'

'And we know this because that girl used to come wearing a veil up to her stomach, and only those women who go to someone's house in a veil like this are those who are for sale.'

I could see the disgust on her face but she doesn't have the slightest bit idea that situation force us to do things which in normal condition would disgust us.

She introduces herself as the wife of the person we were talking to.

She says further conspirately,

'One time, that man was visited by a woman and royal guards, on the other day of Yuvraj's attack.'

Now that is news to me, and it seems that Viraj and Ekansh also had no clue because confusion is visible on their face.

Who sent the soldiers?

She continues not noticing our expressions,

'After that the next day the man just up and left. Nobody heard nor saw him again. He vanished like a ghost.'

It has created many questions instead of solving one.

Who sent the soldiers? Who was the woman visiting him? Who was that man? Was he really involved in my attack?

I know Malwa attacked on me because they confessed to Mohini.

So why did they send someone who wants to expose them but also kill me?

This is getting really confusing. First I had only one man to find but now I have to find that man as well as the woman visiting him.

Which means starting from obvious, I have to visit harem.

We roam around some more, spending the whole morning there trying to get any information about him.

But nobody could provide us any extra information, they just repeated what we are already told.

And I could see through the made up information and real ones.

By the time we arrived back in castle, it is almost dark.

We nod at each other that we will meet after changing.

I change in the bathroom of Ekansh while he change in his bedroom.

I don't want to meet Mohini right now without atleast solving it half.

We gather in the meeting room and send the notice to my chief soldier to present himself in front of us.

We are sitting when he enters and greets us then at my say he takes a seat.

I lean forward and ask him.

'I want to know why Royal guards had gone to Rainagarh the next day of my attack? And with whom?'

He frowns at that then he says,

'Yuvraj, Ranisa had sent the royal guards with her translator, Swati, we were not informed of the reason other than that we have to go there and it was granted by Prince Viraj.'

I look at him to find him shocked, he looks back at me and says,

'Hume iske baare mein pata tak nahi hai, Agam, toh hum iski anumati kaise de sakte hai.'

'I don't even know about it, Agam, so how can I allow it.'

I trust him and can hear the truth in his words. I just nod my head to show my trust in him then ask the chief soldier,

'Who said that?'

He replies in fear thinking that he did something wrong,

'Yuvraj, Ranisa's maid told us.'

So it was Swati who had gone there, maybe Mohini sent soldiers to check out the house just like me coming to same conclusion.

I send an attendee to bring Swati here.

After some moment she enters here. She greets us then stand there with a half veil on her face.

I ask her,

'Why did you go with 10-12 soldiers to Rainagarh?'

She instantly answers in short,

'On the say of Ranisa.'

I ask her,

'Why?'

She replies,

'To check out the cottage for Jarul flower smell to cover up the smell of poison and only alert them when I find it inside.'

So I was right, Mohini was trying to find and cover all her base to find who attacked me.

I have to stop doubting her, we can't move forward if even small doubt enters in our marriage at every turn.

But I want to know if they found something. So I ask her,

'Did you find anything there? Or do you know the person who was staying there?'

She replies instantly,

'No, we didn't find anything suspicious there and I don't know who that person is.'

Something odd tickles me so I ask her,

'Why did you take Prince Viraj's name for this? You could have taken Mohini's name easily.'

I could see a mocking smile forming there as she says,

'Aapko bataate hue khed hota hai ki, Ranisa ke aadesh ka koi maan nahi hai aur uss samay toh wo ek daasi se bhi batar thi.'

'I regret to tell you that Ranisa's orders have no respect and at that time she was worse than a slave.'

Her words shock me and she continues,

'Nobody was bothered with her whether she lives or dies, if not for me, so I have to do this, she wasn't even allowed to touch anything of yours.

If she wanted things from these people prior to your attack she has to attach name of other members to have things done here.'

Her every words angering me as I look at my chief soldier as he gulps in fear seeing my gaze at him.

'But Ranisa doesn't want you to intervene, she has already found a way to make them respect her so don't interfere and make things for her difficult, these were her exact words.'

I frown at her but she doesn't say anything else, just takes my permission to leave and left the room.

I stand up as the whole room quietens in dead silence. I walk to the table on far side to pour myself a glass of wine.

I take a sip and ask chief soldier while casually leaning on the wall,

'I hope for your sake that you never treated her like this.'

He shakes his head vehemently. I smile at seeing the fear in his eyes as I walk up to him and say,

'Arre aap toh darr gaye, hume puri umeed hai ki aapne ye nahi kiya hoga.'

'Hey, you are so scared, I sincerely hope that you have not done this.'

I put my hands on soldiers and sequeeze hard making him wince.

I crouch only half to look him dead straight in his eyes then wipe my smile and say with a dark promise,

'Because if you did something like that you will be die a very painful death instead of a honorable one.'

He gulps and nods his head repeatedly.

I stand up then pat him on the back leaving everyone.

Its time for me to meet Mohini.

I enter my room to find her reading on the bed with open hairs.

I go to enter further but stop when I see her signing while looking beside her.

I frown at who is there? As I can see no one.

I enter slowly further hiding myself in shadows.

I could see my kurta laying there then I focus on her signs,

'You can't touch me. I am angry with you.'

Then she focuses on her book and I am confused if I am reading the signs correct or not.

Then she sneakily places the arm part of kurta on herself.

She pretends to be frustrated by closing her book then looks down at the kurta and sign angrily,

'You never listen to me. You didn't even discuss the problem taking you away from me. You just got attacked but you are taking the same risk as last time.'

She pauses then goes on,

'Last time I wanted you to go but this time not when your enemies are everywhere. You just like to make me angry, I wish I could speak so I could yell at you loudly.

So loud that you have to put hands on your ears, then apologize to me instantly.'

I am now somewhat understanding whats going on.

She wanted to vent her anger which she didn't got to do it that day so she is doing it now.

I focuses on her back to see tears filling her eyes as she sign,

'Abhi toh hume aapki aadat lagi thi aur uss aadat ka nasha bhi pura hone nahi diya apne. Agar aapko kuch hua toh aap manate reh jaenge par kabhi aapse yun baat nahi karenge.'

'I have just started your habit and you have not let the intoxication of my habit get satisfied. If you have been hurt then I will make sure that I will never talk to you like this again.'

I smile at that.

I know from my side that the feelings I have for her is very deep but it feels good that its from her side too.

Its good to know that it is not only lust.

I know she won't say any of these things to me as she knows that I will have to do these things more.

Thats why she is doing it like this so she can vent her anger and follow her duty as Queen too.

She removes the arm of her kurta from her then stand up pridely and sign looking at my kurta showing arrogance,

'And your punishment is that you will crave for me but I won't let you touch me, so keep your distance from me.'

My laugh sneaks out at that and she whips to face where I am standing, becoming shocked.

Then she flushes red with embarrasment finding me listening to her conversation with imaginary me.
