30. Paint It All Red

Mohini POV

I leave the Royal court and enter my room to find Naina there waiting for me.

When she sees me, she stands up and comes to me saying,

'Mil gayi khushi? Ban gayi Rani iss rajya ke liye? Aap humesha se yahi toh chahti thi, isiliye masoom banne ka dhong kar rahi thi kab se?'

'Have you found happiness? Have you become the queen for this kingdom? You always wanted this, that's why you were pretending to be innocent for so long?'

I keep my expression bored so she can't see how much her words are affecting me.

I move from away from her and slowly remove my crown, keeping it on the top shelf of the cabinet.

I push it back with the tip of my fingers.

Naina says trying to gain my attention,

'I regret ever helping or sympathising you.'

I turn around and sign without showing any expression,

'Then why did you?'

Swati translates it with heat.

Naina gasps then says,

'You are right, I was a fool. When you started to doubt Agam the first time I should have stopped you instead of helping you.

I don't understand why did even Agam allowed you to go even after knowing the reason.'

I laugh at that, she is acting innocent when I know for fact that she exposed me to Yuvraj before me even telling her.

I sign,

'I want to know, if you had already knew about the truth and had already told Yuvraj then why you acted so innocent in front of me, huh?'

She looks at me with frown and says heatedly,

'I didn't tell him, it was Avantika who told him.'

I frown at that then sign slowly,

'How did Avantika knew about this?'

She realises what she said in the heat of moment and she just says,

'I don't know and I should go take care of Agam instead of wasting my time here. You enjoy your coronation.'

She says the last bit with narcissim and leaves in hurry.

I got my answer, Avantika was keeping eyes on me maybe on the say of Yuvraj but I don't fault him for that.

I sit down and ponder something.

Other than me only Avantika knew the half purpose of my meet, and that man has died, how?

First I thought Yuvraj knew about this but Avantika knew the purpose.

And we already established that Yuvraj wouldn't do that to me. But where did the ring go?

Could it be that she killed him? But how is she connected to all this?

Only one person can answer these questions, Avantika.

I stand up, go to my trunk and take out the sword then check its sharpness by cutting the rope of the bed. It slices the rope easily.

It is still sharp. I look up to see Swati looking at me with wide and fearful eyes.

I indicate at the bed to fix it and she nod while swallowing.

I leave my room with sword in my hand and Swati on my heels to Avantika's room.

I enter without announcement throwing her door open, Avantika rises from her bed and beweildered by my behaviour then say angrily when I sit down on the couch in her room,

'What is this? Just because you have become Queen doesn't give you the permission to enter my room like this?'

I sit down with legs spread wide and sword in between touching the floor. I lean it on my one leg while I sign for Swati to translate,

'I am going to question you and I want yes and no answers. Were you spying on me?'

I tap the sword on the floor repeatedly waiting for her answer, she answers nervously,

'Yes.'

I question and again tap the floor as Swati translates it monotonely,

'Did you had beforehand knowledge of my reason to visit the Chaar Bazaar?'

She replies, 'Yes.'

I question as Swati translates it monotonely,

'I want to know why did you kill Amar Shekhar?'

She turns shocked and says angrily,

'How dare you accuse me of someone's murder?'

I look up to her and ask her in signs and Swati translating it with suspicion,

'You tell me, apart from me, Swati and you, nobody had the knowledge that I was going to meet him, so who killed him then, when I and Swati wanted answers from him, only you knew right?'

She suddenly turns pale and tries to hide her eyes while answering me,

'Yes, I... I only knew.'

The way she answers puts me on edge and I sign as Swati translates with suspicion in her voice,

'Who else knew?'

She replies still like she is hiding something,

'I said only I knew.'

Her lie is irritating me, I rush to her, pushing her against the wall and keep the sword on her neck warning her to say truth.

Swati comes and says nonchantly,

'Mere hisaab se aap Rani-sa ko saach bata de, kyunki abhi talwar gardan pe chetawani ke liye rakha hai, agar iss bar jhooth bola toh gardan dhar se alag karne ke liye rakhengi.'

'According to me, you should tell Rani-sa the truth, because right now the sword is kept on your neck as a warning, if you lie this time then she will keep the sword to separate your neck from your body.'

Sometimes she terrifies me with the way she has with words for me but I don't focus on it because I am feeling murderous myself.

Avantika glares at me but replies,

'Kamal Nath.'

Swati asks her,

'How?'

She replies while looking away,

'Because he heard me telling Viraj that I want to talk something important to Agam and he intercepted me wanting to know that. I had no choice but to tell him.'

I leave her and move to go away when I think of something, I hand the sword to Swati and ask in signs which Swati translates with wide eyes like she didn't thought about that,

'Did you know who gave a unique blue ring with gold sprinkles on it to Yuvraj? Maybe that Kamal Nath?'

She thinks hard and replies,

'I was in the garden talking to him when Agam came and returned the ring to him saying that....'

She tries to remember then light up and say,

'That he can't take his belonging as gift and that he thinks this ring doesn't suit him because he is having constant headaches after wearing this and Kamal Nath took the ring back pleasantly but didn't wore it, instead he hid it in his kurta.'

I knew it that ring is connected with this whole fiasco.

I move to my room boiling with anger thinking how dare he tries to cross me.

I sit down in the sitting area and send Swati to bring commander. I tap the tip of my sword on the floor furiously.

The commander enters with Swati and he asks,

'What can I do for you, Rani-sa?'

I lean back keeping the sword aside and sign with cold eyes which Swati translates with perfect coldness of hers,

'You have till tomorrow morning's first light time, to prepare a team of  30 soldiers whom you trust with their loyalty to Suryagarh then sniff out the soldiers who are aiding Kamal Nath and find out where he went and your time starts out now.'

I look at Swati and sign,

'Send the message to the alliance kingdoms that nobody will give shelter to Kamal Nath as he is the main suspect in the murder of Yuvraj.'

She nods her head and commander looks baffled but replies,

'Don't worry Rani-sa, everything will be prepared as your say in the morning, I will take your leave.'

Kamal Nath, I will make you regret your own birth and paint the street of that kingdom red who has given you shelter.

I am coming for you.

Next morning I freshen up, change into my laal saree with white blouse whose sleeve is up to wrist and lengthe is up to mid waist.

After having light breakfast, I tie an armor around my waist tucking my pallu inside it.

I tie my hair in a bun and wear a saffron turban around my head.

My steps stop outside medic room and promise to him that I will come back in one piece to him then force myself to move because I will go weak if I saw him.

And right now I want this fire inside me to brew so I can kill that man without remorse.

I walk to the entrance of the palace where commander is waiting for me.

I reach there and he bows then says,

'Rani-sa I have prepared a group of 30 soldiers ready to go with you, I am holding the soldiers in the dungeon who aided Kamal Nath, we also got the location where he is headed from here.'

He hesitates and Swati comes forward saying,

'You better tell Rani-sa where he is heading?'

He answers with his eyes down,

'Malwa'

Good, I will hit two birds with one arrow.

She asks, 'When?'

He answers,

'The night when Yuvraj was attacked.'

I tuck my sword in my waist and sign for Swati to translate,

'He has a one day head start, I want to reach there before him.'

His head whip to mine and he looks shocked when he says,

'But Rani-sa he already has a head start and journey there as it is take 10 days.'

I sign,

'If not before then almost as he reaches it and that's for you to figure out.'

His mouth flaps open and close. I move from him to take out Yuvraj's horse who is very fastest.

I am feeding him when Swati comes behind me and says,

'Let me come with you, I also want to protect you.'

I look at her with cold face and sign,

'I don't need protecting, the people needs protecting from me right now.'

I take the horse to drink water. While he is drinking water, I turn to Swati and sign,

'And I want you here to keep an eye on Avantika and servants' quarter so that Kamal Nath's helpers don't hurt Yuvraj. I am entrusting Yuvraj to you.

I promised to him that I will come back in one piece.'

She reluctantly nods her head.

Commander comes and tells me that everything is ready for departure and asks,

'Is 30 soldiers enough, Rani-sa?'

I sign which Swati translates,

'I don't even need them but yes they will be beneficial to look after my back.'

Swati brings aarti plate from nowhere and does my tilak on forehead then rotate the plate in circular motion in front of me.

She throws flower petals on me,

'Vijayi Bhava, Rani-sa. I have already sent the message to Raja-sa to look after the empire for you and its your order.'

The horse is saddled so I just climb on it and start my grueling journey, stopping only two times a day for very short duration to eat and rest.

We arrive Malwa 7th day and I am totally boosted up.

Seeing my attire and everything the guards stop me from entering the palace but one of my soldiers step forward and says,

'If you don't want to die then leave Rani-sa's path or you die by her hand.'

The guards laugh and say,

'Yeah, just like her husband. We know she can't give us a good fight, don't forget before becoming your Queen she has been our princess and we know how weak and pathetic she is.'

I have enough giving second chances to people now they will pay.

Now is the time to show them that I am not what they think instead I am their horrible nightmare.

I move my soldier aside and slash my Baba's guard from the top to down in the middle and the other guard turns shocked.

He picks up the sword and I just injure him because he didn't disrespect me.

I become half-covered by his blood.

I enter and fight the guards, I had already instructed my soldiers to injure them and incapable to attack again not to kill them.

But it doesn't mean that the blood doesn't flow, and I take a bath in this blood.

I see the medicine researcher, and he pales seeing me there in this state, which is answer enough for me that they are involved.

He never liked me, and many times he tried to kill me after the incident with my mother.

I didn't know what his problem was with me, but Dada always protected me from him.

I stop his path and give him my cold smile before striking him.

He tries to fight back with me with his sword, shouting,

'That man deserved it and I know that you also deserved to die by my hand that day, you are fighting here for your mother's killer.'

I just give him my killer smile and render him weaponless because I don't care what he thinks about me.

I slash every part of his body with my sword and he tries to cower from me, screaming in pain but I slit his neck killing him.

I move when suddenly Devika comes in front of me with a sword in her trembling hands.

I know my sight isn't pleasant; I am covered in blood.

She says,

'Don't dare to enter the palace any further or friend or not, I will kill you.'

I laugh hysterically at that. She really thinks that she can stop me and kill me as well.

I drop the sword, she sees this, frowns but goes to attack me.

But I grab her hair and with another hand snatch the sword from her hand, throwing it away.

I smash her head with my knee, which makes her cry out in pain then tug her head back to look me in the eye.

I slap her repeatedly and she calls me nasty names in between.

I throw her on the floor, she looks at me with tears and anger in her eyes and her nose is bleeding.

I crouch in front of her and sign,

'You may have pushed me out of Malwa but don't forget your place. Your place is on my feet.'

I stand up and crush her hand with my feet.

She cries and begs me repeatedly,

'Please leave me, it's hurting.'

I leave her and pick up my sword, then look at her cradling her right hand and crying in fear.

I move to the Royal court where my father is, no doubt.

The guard try to stop me but I just slash him diagonally and enter the court with my guards.

Right now, I have thoughts of only making the blood flow, but I control my urge for a moment.

I make a beeline for Maina Devi.

She tries to step back but I catch her wrist and drag her with me to the center of the court.

My soldiers have already covered the entrance.

Someone tries to attack from behind, but they don't know that I am always aware of my enemies' surroundings.

I swing my sword back over my head blocking their attack without turning back.

Then with my strength I push the person's sword back then turn around and without looking I twist the sword and slash the person diagonally.

I look that it is Sripad, a flash of hurt passes through his face but I just don't care about it.

He was dead for me the second he chose his throne over me.

I bring out my dupatta and tie the sword, then tie it around my body so it is suspended in air horizontally, with its tip directed towards Maina Kaki.

I will pull the end of the dupatta if anyone moves and the sword will enter Maina kaki.

I sign looking at scared Kamal Nath which Maina kaki translates scaredly.

'Did you really think that you would be safe here and I won't figure out who attacked Yuvraj and then won't come here?'

'What are you saying, Maina?'

My father is looking angrily at her.

She replies in tears,

'I am translating what she is signing, or she will kill me.'

I smile and sign, looking from him to Baba,

'First, I thought I would simply kill you, but I have to know how my father can take the side of someone who killed his wife in the guise of a friend?'

The whole court quiets at that.

My father looks like he will burst with anger when he says,

'What nonsense are you speaking?'

I look at Kamal Nath to see him sneaking out so I point one of my soldiers towards him.

He catches Kamal Nath and starts beating him by bringing him to the floor.

When somebody tries to stop my soldier, I just dig the sword in Maina making her cry out so my father stops them from moving.

He looks disgusted when he says,

'You are trying to kill a man who helped in hurting the killer of your mother on his nerve.'

I bring Maina Kaki closer in anger which makes the sword to pierce her skin and blood trickles out. She cries out.

My father shouts at me in fear,

'What are you doing? We didn't move.'

I focus on Kamal Nath when I sign,

'I know the truth. I know who killed my mother and I also know who was the leader. Show his ring.'

Kamal Nath pales so white at that. Maina Kaki also focuses on his hand after translating.

He tries to hide his hand, but my soldier brings his hand in fron,t showcasing his ring.

Maina Kaki gasps at that and says,

'Raje, his ring.... HIS RING.'

My father couldn't understand her panic and asks,

'What? What ring?'

Maina Kaki looks at him with tears and says,

'Rajkumari told me that after the incident, many months after that the leader wore that ring which he is wearing now. He led the group who killed Ranisaheb and rendered Mohini mute.'

He goes shocked with an expressionless face and says tightly,

'He must be ordered by that Rajshekhar.'

I smile and sign which while translating Maina Kaki also comes to the same conclusion,

'If he was ordered, then why did he hide his ring from me, why did he kill Amar Shekhar before he could talk to me, why didn't he want me to investigate Aai's death?'

My father sits down on the steps with his head in his hands and says in a daze,

'No, it can't be true. No, no, no. What have I done?'

Kamal Nath groans in pain. I indicate to stop the beating, let him stand and speak,

'You don't know the whole truth till now princess, you are so stupid, you just---'

I stand straighter because Sripad Rao has slit his throat from behind him killing him on impact.

He looks at me with anger in his eyes and says,

'He doesn't deserve to live or to speak to you like that.'

I free Maina Kaki and sit on the floor with my hand on my head, thinking it's over for now.

It's over, not the way I wanted, but it's over.

I stand up and move my hand in a circle to wrap it up and move.

My father calls from behind and says,

'I got the news that you stopped our trade but now every doubt is cleared so you should open the trade routes for me.'

I laugh on my foolishness where I believed him for a second that he was remorseful for what happened to Aai but he is only concerned with his profit.

I sign after handing my sword to my guard,

'Do you really think that I wouldn't have come here if not for him?'

He frowns at me and I continue to sign,

'Thank God that Kamal Nath was the main culprit, or I would have been here instead to kill you and paint the palace with your blood.'

Maina Kaki gulps after translating. Swati would have been best because only she could deliver my lines, adding her own craziness to it.

'Misunderstanding or not, you choose to attack first instead of talking to us, so you have to pay for your part, and believe me this is really small punishment compared to what you did.'

Her eyes widen with fear while Baba shouts in anger,

'Didn't you do the same thing, lost in anger?'

I laugh at his audacity and sign,

'I checked my facts before coming here and I only injured your guards except the guard who disrespected me and the medicine researcher who tried to kill me many times before.

If I really would have been totally lost in anger then none of your guards would have been alive and you would have been begging for your life from me on the floor.'

Maina kaki steps back at that and I leave everyone in a state of shock.

I am coming back to you, Yuvraj.
