Agam POV
I move towards my office after the usual court proceedings when I get a glimpse of Mohini standing in there with another record book.
I sigh at her stubborness. I don't know how and why she has picked this obssesion of knowing Suryagarh's administration and persons related to it.
No, I am not going to doubt her. I still remember her sweet, smiling face twisted in utter saddness and heartbreak.
Then her blank face from then on.
I should be grateful for this interaction because of her curiosity.
But somewhere dread and fear seeps into me thinking she could get hurt over pursuing some information which another person doesn't want her to find out.
3 years and I am still not sure whether my own empire is safe for me and my wife or not.
The other day I had a heart attack almost, when Swati came to me worried that Mohini is acting weird.
I had left everything to run to her.
God, I can't erase that image of hers, her eyes glazed, unfocused, her body sweating and shaking violently.
When she explained it was a panic attack. I understood why it came.
Losing someone close to you in front of your eyes leaves a very deep mark.
She lost her mother, which gave her panic attacks.
I lost my mother, which gives me sleepless nights.
I haven't slept well in days after Mohini started to sleep on the couch.
This confirmed my belief that she is my little angel who unknowingly helps me to sleep.
I enter my office and sit down. I look at her, waiting for her to lay it on me.
She quietly opens the two books in front of me with those persons face whom had resigned together 3 years ago.
I ask her,
'What about them? You are just showing me the same people, only this time 9 years ago.'
She points at something, I look at there. I understood what she was showing.
In the records, these people had temporarily left this position for a certain period of time.
I am shocked that she found this. Why did she even go 9 years back? I can't tell her about this.
She makes a Why? gesture with her hands.
I sweat because I can't tell her the truth, I can't even lie to her so I try to be vague,
'Yes I know, my father had sent them for an important job for him.'
I see Swati silently entering and standing beside her.
I don't meet her eyes as she narrows her eyes at me. I can't afford to lose her over this.
I sweat more, thinking that she can see through my lies.
Her hand flies while signing, which Swati translates,
'What work? And did they really leave for Bapusaa's work?'
I panic and fear from inside, but don't let it show. Fear of losing her is very prominent so I rudely reply,
'It is Bapusaa's business, not yours and yes.'
Her face fell and hurt flashes on her face, but she quickly hides it. I wince from inside, but it is for the better.
She signs again rapidly. I groan in frustration and ask her,
'What now?'
Swati says,
'Are you aware of this business or not?'
I feign impatience, focusing on the scroll, waving my hand, and saying,
'Yes, I know for a very long time, and now leave me alone, please. I am trying to work here.'
Out of the corner of my eye, I see her pain-filled and hurt face nodding.
God, how much I just want to pull her in my arms and take all her pains, but this is necessary for me so she won't loathe me.
She turns to leave, so I hold her wrist to stop her. She looks at my hand holding hers with furrowed brows.
I just can't help myself. I say,
'Aap jo bhi karna chahti hai, kariye.'
'Whatever you want to do, do it.'
I step closer to her, continuing on,
'Aap Suryagarh ko acche se janna chahti hai, toh janiye.'
'If you want to know the Suryagarh well, then do so.'
I step more closer,
'Par aapko ek kharoch bhi nahi aani chahiye.'
'But you shouldn't even get a scratch.'
I step even more closer, making my voice husky but demanding so she can understand what I want from her,
'Kyunki agar aapko kuch bhi hua,'
'Because if anything happens to you,'
I bring my face closer to her, enjoying the goosebumps reaction and flare of heat in her eyes.
I bring my dagger against her face, trailing it from her forehead to her lips, rubbing it there, which makes her lips part,
'Toh hum aapko chot pahuchane wale ka naksha bigad ke rakh denge aur aapko ye sab hone dene ke liye band kamre mein dand bhi denge.
'So I will spoil the shape of the person who hurt you and will also punish you behind closed doors for allowing all this to happen.
And believe me, Mohini, that punishment will be very dirty and will make a mess of you, all I have to use is my hand slapping punishingly at a very naughty place.'
I whisper that part loud enough for only her to hear.
She doesn't understand why I will be slapping her; confusion is evident on her face, but she knows it is dirty because of the use of that word by me.
I trail the dagger down to her cleavage and tap it there, making goosebumps rise on her.
She gulped visibly, her cheeks flush red, heat makes her eyes looks like warm honey and I, wanting to taste that sweetness.
She snatches her hand away and quickly moves to the door.
But before she can leave, I have to make it clear to her that the topic she raised today is off limits for her to research.
I put the dagger back.
So I say in a cold voice,
'Wait, I know about this temporary leave so you don't have to solve it llike other puzzles. That is related to my father so I strongly warn you to stay away from it or I won't be responsible for my actions, Mohini.'
She furrows her brow in suspicion but doesn't question me, nods her head, and walks out with Swati following her.
I miss these reactions of hers that she didn't give me over the past days.
If I want these reactions from her, then I have to warm myself up to her and never let her know the reason behind these temporary leaves.
I ask the attendee to bring Viraj and Ekansh straight to me when they arrive and I got back to my work.
During the afternoon, Viraj and Ekansh arrive, entering my office, they take a seat while Ekansh asks me, smilingly,
'Soooo, soon to be king, is everything ready for and after your coronation?'
Viraj glares at his joking tone, while I just shake my head and say,
'Everything is in line, after the coronation, my plan will be in motion and executed.'
Viraj smirks and says,
'How much you want to bet that, at your coronation, you will see plenty of fireworks?'
Ekansh adds smirking as well,
'And those won't be happy fireworks either.'
I nod my head, saying,
'Pity I won't be able to see those fireworks in Malwa.'
Ekansh laughs while Viraj smirks, then Ekansh gets serious,
'Did everyone agree with you and are they accepting, or do we need to teach them a lesson?'
He is talking about the kings of alliance kingdoms. I nod my head,
'They are smart enough not to disagree with me, either they are with me or they aren't.'
Viraj adds,
'And they know they have to be with you for their good.'
My all plans are in row and one by one it will be executed. Then I become serious remembering the record books.
I can handle the outside world but how do I handle things happening inside my own empire which I am not even aware of.
Odd things are happening in my empire, but I don't have a clue about it.
All serious, I look towards them and say,
'Come with me.'
They frown, but they follow me.
We enter the record section of the library, and I take out the record book which Mohini had shown me 2 days ago.
We all sat down in the sitting area of that section and I lay down the book, opening the page that I wanted to show them.
Looking at it with furrowed brows, Ekansh asks me,
'Why are you showing us the record book of the councillors of your empire's states that are too of 3 years ago?'
He is always impatient while Viraj is waiting for me to explain.
I flip the pages one by one, showing them the necessary thing while saying,
'If you look closely, all these ministers had resigned from their positions on the same day.'
Viraj looks at it and says,
'Hmmm... that is odd, but not that odd that you would get so serious.'
Ekansh nods his agreeing with him. I point out the states they are representing,
'They are the councillors of the outer border and inner border region of Suryagarh facing South.'
Ekansh connects the dots first and says,
'The death of 3 years ago and their resignation 3 years ago, both are connected somehow.'
Viraj also connects it. His face turns in a calculative mode and asks me,
'How did you find this?'
I tell him the truth that Mohini found this and showed me. His face twists in confusion, and he asks me,
'Why was she even finding this?'
I shrugged and said not caring that she wanted to find this,
'I don't know, maybe she heard about the deaths in the ashram, or maybe she wanted to know Suryagarh and the workings here, so she stumbled upon it. I don't care about her finding this.
I care about why these deaths were not reported because they all were still in their position when these deaths happened.'
Ekansh speaks up, still looking at the records,
'Maybe they reported it.'
I shake my head and say,
'I checked the emergency records from 3 years ago, no sudden large group of deaths were reported from any of these regions.'
Ekansh, lost in thought,s mutters,
'It's not like there were 2-3 deaths that nobody told the ministers, so they didn't know about it. There were too many deaths that they themselves would have noticed without anyone telling them.'
I nod my head, agreeing with hi,m and say,
'I looked over all the ministers of court and ministers in direct contact with the crown, but never thought of looking into the ministers with indirect contact with the crown.'
Viraj looks at me and asks,
'Is there any other reason why you didn't think to look into them?'
I nod and tell him.
'That time my sole focus was to find holes in my empire and I didn't consider them because they did a very important work for my father 9 years ago, you know.'
Both of their eyes widen in realization. I continue,
'They did it for my father without asking any questions and made sure nobody knew about it. Mohini found out about their temporary leave while going through their records.'
Viraj asks cautiously,
'Do you think you should tell her about this?'
'No!!', I roar out.
I take a deep breath and continue,
'I can't tell her about this or she will loathe me. She already hates me. I can accept her hatred because it means she has feelings for me.
But I can't accept her disgust because then I will be some stranger to her who has done a very disgusting task.'
Ekansh groans,
'Agam...'
But I interrupt him,
'No, and I am not going to talk about this further with you two.'
They don't understand. Because what I feel for Mohini can't be expressed in words. I am not ready to accept it yet but I won't give her any reason to push me away.
Viraj changes the subject and says,
'Right so, can we talk to either of them, or you unalived all of them?'
I relax in my chair, smirk at him, and say,
'Maybe or maybe not. I said I didn't doubt them, but I never said that I trusted them with something so important.
But some of them died because of natural causes, because I had something over them to buy their silence.'
Ekaansh nods slowly and says,
'So we have to figure it out by ourselves?'
I nod my head in answer.
Virah abruptly stands up and says,
'We will look into this matter later, right now we brought a gift for you which you were waiting for very patiently.'
My fear vanishes and dark calm washes over me. A sinister smile carves on my face just like the both of them are wearing.
I ask them,
'Where is he?'
Ekansh bows and says,
'In your special dungeon, King.'
We walk out of the library and move towards the dungeon.
When I entered the small space, I found two men hanging there, bound and gagged.
When they see us enter, one starts to cower in fear and pee while the other starts to struggle in his binds to free himself.
The pungent odor wafts inside, but I will have my answers; this won't steer me away. I have seen worse things done by my victim in here.
I indicate to Ekansh and Viraj to release them and make them sit.
When they are seated on the floor, I crouch in front of them while my friends stand behind them to make sure they don't try to act smart.
I remove the gags and ask them,
'Who are you both? And who sent you to the ashram?'
The one who cowered just shakes his head while the one who struggled is saying,
'I don't know what you are talking about. You are the future king. You shouldn't act like this and capture anyone.'
So he is talkative. I grip his chin hard and ask him with gritted teeth,
'I don't care what you think about me. Tell me, who are you and who sent you?'
Fear flashes in his eyes, but he just shakes his head and says,
'I said I don't know what you're talking about.'
Anger rises inside me, and I ask again,
'Why did you target my wife?'
He stubbornly shakes his head and repeats the same thing. I look at Viraj and say,
'Hold him tighter.'
Ekansh speaks up,
'He is not talking.'
I smirk sinisterly at the man and say,
'Soon he will fucking sing.'
I bring out my dagger and face its side meant for bleeding towards him. I stab him in the inner thighs and twist it around and repeat my question.
When he still doesn't answer me, I just calm myself down, stand up, and bring hot, boiling oil.
I steadily drip the oil on the open wounds, he starts to scream with immense pain.
I stop the dripping and ask him again,
'Now what is your answer and if I don't like it I will pour the hot oil again.'
He pants through pain and answers me,
'I came there to injure Princess Mohini only.'
I turned shocked at his use of Princess, then enraged. I ask him,
'Are you from Malwa? Who sent you to hurt her?'
His eyes widen at his slip-up, and he clamps his mouth shut.
I know that the pain of oil will become bearable for him slowly if I do it steadily so I think to torture him first and ask questions later.
I look at my friends to release them. I take out the whip adorned with pointed nails.
I whip both of them releasing my anger, frustration and fear remembering Mohini hurt, and lying down there because of them.
Then I bring salt and rub it on each of their wounds thoroughly.
Their screams are like a melody to me.
On the battlefield, I kill people with dignity, but if that person enters my region and tries to backstab me, I make them question their own existence.
Then they die in pain and indignity with melodious screams, screams are there sometimes.
I ask Viraj to hold the talkative one. I crouch in front of him and I ask him,
'Now, if I ask, you answer honestly and I will think to let you live.'
He whimpers in pain, and I ask,
'Who sent you here?'
He moans in pain and answers,
'Malwa's Yuvraj.'
We all turn shocked and look at each other. Viraj comes forward and asks,
'Why would her own brother want to injure her?'
I slapped his face and repeat the question, and he slurs while answering,
'Hume nahi pata, woh hume jungle mein sabse chhupkar mile, hume ek thaila diya sone ke sikko ka aur kaha ki hume sirf Rajkumari ko chot pahuchani hai.'
'We don't know, he met us secretly in the forest, gave us a bag of gold coins, and told us that we only hurt the princess.'
He moans again and says in a tight voice,
'Yuvraj Ramaji Rao ne jo karne ke liye kaha humne woh kiya, waise bhi woh shatru ke karib jaakar Malwa ko dhokha de rahi thi.'
'We did whatever Prince Ramji Rao asked us to do, anyway, she was betraying Malwa by going closer to the enemy.'
My body wound tight at his tone and words. I growl out,
'Come again?'
He glares at me and says,
'I had to keep an eye on her for the perfect opportunity when I saw how she kicked her dignity as Princess of Malwa and became your dirty slave.'
Hot red rage burns through me, knowing he saw my Mohini at her unguarded moment, which was meant for me.
He intruded on it, he stole from her.
Rage takes over, and I pound his head with my fists, almost killing him, but I pull back and torture him for a long time.
At last, I take out my dagger and keep it at his neck, saying,
'I said I will think about it, I didn't say I will let you live.'
I bring the dagger from his neck and point the pointed edge at his eyes and say,
'Humari Mohini ko unki chah ke bina toh hum bhi nahi dekh sakte aur tumne toh unhe aise samay mein dekha jab wo puri tarah achet thi.
'Even I cannot see my Mohini without her desire, and you saw her at a time when she was completely unguarded.
Jinn aakhon ne Mohini par dakaiti dali, unn aakhon ka iss duniya mein koi kaam nahi.'
The eyes that robbed Mohini, those eyes have no use in this world.
At the last words, I plunge the dagger into his eyeballs, listening to the crunching and squishy sound.
I take his hand and say,
'Jin haathon ne humari Mohini ko chot pahunchayi, woh haath ab kisi kaam layak nahi.'
'The hands which hurt my Mohini are no longer fit for any use.'
And I stab his hands, listening to his cries. At last I slit his throat and end him.
I give the same fate to others also.
My friends do not interrupt my fumings, and I go to the attached bathroom to wash up here.
I wash off the blood, remove my clothes, and wear white pyjama dhoti and wrap white cloth around me.
I feel light after killing them, but I still am angry and fuming at the new piece of information.
I will kill Ramaji with my own hands before he even reaches Mohini.
The next day, after the court proceedings, my father calls me and tells me,
'Both my friends are arriving today, Pratap and Kamal.'
I notice Naina standing behind Bapusaa with a nervous expression. Bapusaa sees where I am seeing and says,
'Today, Naina and Mohini are going to our famous Chaar Bazaar.'
No, I can't let Mohini out of my sight. She will never understand that her own brother is trying to hurt her.
I go to say something when Bapusaa says with an authoritative voice,
'I am still the king, Agam, and I want my daughter-in-law to buy whatever she wants to buy for herself and for the coronation.'
Now what will I do?
I never deny my father's wishes when he puts them first, and I can't tell him.
